NEW DELHI: The Delhi government is set to introduce new guidelines aimed at tackling the city's parking challenges. These guidelines will focus on addressing the needs of various users, including pedestrians, cyclists, emergency vehicles, and public transport, officials announced.

In a recent meeting, Delhi Lt Governor V K Saxena discussed strategies to reduce congestion in the city. The meeting, which involved transport and other relevant departments, emphasized the importance of creating tailored parking plans for specific areas. These plans will consider the diverse needs of all city residents, ensuring accessible and efficient parking solutions.

Of the 17 parking plans initially proposed by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, only four have received approval. Out of these, two plans have been implemented in the Lajpat Nagar area. The new guidelines will build upon these plans to further improve parking management across the capital.

Approximately two years ago, the Delhi government notified the Delhi Maintenance and Management of Parking Places Rules. These rules introduced concepts such as "peak" and "non-peak" pricing, increased charges during the implementation of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), and the use of advanced technology for managing parking spaces.
