Ranchi: Traditional lamps make the celebration of Diwali special even today. Sarpanch Toli of Bodeya, about 10 km from Ranchi, is a village where dozens of families have lived their lives by making clay lamps for decades. This work has been going on continuously for many years, but the time of Diwali is special for them.

As Diwali comes close, the entire family is engaged in the work of making clay lamps. The men of the house bring soil from far away fields, knead it and different types of lamps are made from them. The women and children help it in drying and colouring. The only way to earn the income of all the families of Sarpanch Toli is to make a lamp. They do not do any other work. Ramesh Prajapati says that this is the profession of their ancestors, which they have kept. The villagers want that the tradition of using and making lamps never ends.

Usually, a lamp prepared in this village in the market is priced around 2 rupees. But from where these lamps are manufactured, it is bought for 50 paise. This is the wholesale price of lamps. People have to pay 500 rupees for 1000 lamps.
