Julian Sands, a British-born actor, was declared dead on Tuesday after a local sheriff's office reported that bones discovered in California mountains had been positively recognised as being his.

In the high region of Mount Baldy in Southern California, where an actor went missing in January, hikers discovered human remains on Saturday, June 24.

The body was taken to the coroner's office for identification next week after it was found at 10 a.m. in a remote area close to Mount Baldy, according to a statement from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

After beginning his ascent of the peak that rises more than 10,000 feet east of Los Angeles on January 13, Sands—a keen hiker and mountaineer—was reported missing on January 14. Throughout the winter, the area saw violent storms.

Skiers, climbers, and travellers all like visiting the sizable, sloping area that lies beneath Mount Baldy's top. However, officials issued a warning at the time, warning that the area was unsafe for outdoor enjoyment due to the significant snowfall brought on by weeks of winter storms. That week, overnight lows in Fahrenheit fell to the mid-20s (4 to minus 4 Celsius).

Sands, 65, has three adult children and is wed to writer Evgenia Citkowitz.

Born in England, Sands relocated to California in the 1980s to seek a career in Hollywood following the success of the historical romance "A Room with a View" (1985), in which he was paired with Helena Bonham Carter as the primary character.

He is survived by his second wife, a journalist named Evgenia Citkowitz.
