NEW DELHI: A debt-ridden man was arrested in the national capital for filing a false car theft allegation in order to claim insurance money, the official said on Monday

Rajesh, a resident of Delhi's village Kheda Dabar, was arrested under the Indian Penal Code's sections 406 (punishment for criminal breach of trust) and 182 (false information, with intent to compel a public officer to exercise his legitimate power to the detriment of another person).

According to the official, Rajesh filed a complaint on December 30, claiming that the incident occurred while he was driving to Bhiwadi for work. Three unknown boys took the automobile near Raghavpura Chhawla in Delhi. The three boys arrived on a motorcycle, and two of them took his car, phone, and cash before fleeing the scene towards Gurgaon. The police opened an investigation into the matter after receiving this complaint.

When the cops checked multiple CCTV cameras near the scene, they discovered that none of them had recorded the incident, raising suspicions that the report was fake. "He was probed again based on evidence taken from CCTV footage and analysis of the complainant's call data record," the source said. "Finally, he admitted to having sold his automobile to a scrap dealer for Rs 60,000 and he sought to claim the car's insurance from the insurance company."
