Lucknow: A disturbing case involving allegations of "love jihad" and the mistreatment of a Hindu woman has come to light in Uttar Pradesh's Fatehpur district. The victim, hailing from Ramganj Pakka Talab, is reported to have married Ahmed Sharif, who claims to be Ajay Singh and works in the merchant navy on ITI Road. However, he concealed his true religious identity from her initially, and they married in 2018.

After their wedding, the couple resided in Aligarh, where Sharif's family would visit them. Approximately five months ago, Sharif left for Malaysia, leaving his wife behind. It was during his absence that his family allegedly subjected her to torment and ultimately expelled her from their house. She spent 12 hours sitting outside without food or water while her in-laws refused to let her inside. Distraught and desperate, the victim sought refuge at a local police station, where she recounted her harrowing experience and filed a complaint. The incident occurred on ITI Road in Sadar Kotwali, leading the police to register a case based on the woman's statement and initiate an investigation.

The charges brought against her brother-in-laws Mohammad Hasan, Lal Mohammad, and sister-in-laws Nasreen and Amreen include sections 498-A (subjecting a woman to cruelty by husband or his family for property), 504 (intentional insult to provoke), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code, as well as sections 3 (taking dowry) and 4 (demanding dowry) of the Dowry Prohibition Act 1961.

According to the complainant, her in-laws began pressuring her to convert to Islam after her husband's departure. They forcefully fed her beef and evicted her from their home when she protested. Tragically, she was two months pregnant and miscarried as a result of the alleged physical abuse. Hindu organizations have also become involved, characterizing the incident as "love jihad." Virendra Pandey, provincial vice president of the Vishva Hindu Parishad, pointed out that the woman had made a small mistake by marrying on the condition that both partners would maintain their respective religions and follow their faiths.

Pandey stated, "She spoke with the Superintendent of Police today, but if action is not taken, then we will meet with him in two days. We will ensure that she receives complete justice and compel the police administration to do so. We will see to it that she regains her lost prestige and respect in society under any circumstance."
