Guwahati: A Padma awardee has been accused of raping an adopted child in Assam. The Assam Police has registered an FIR against him under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act (POCSO) the very next day. In this, a statement has been given by the victim that her father sexually harassed her for a year. After the FIR, the accused approached the Gauhati High Court and got interim bail on 28 December.

A police officer investigating the matter said, 'We cannot comment on this, but the investigation is going on in this matter.' In his order, Justice Arun Dev Chaudhary said that the alleged crime is very serious. He said that the FIR was registered keeping in mind the allegation of the victim, as an attempt has been made to humiliate and defame her reputation. Apart from this, a counter petition was also filed against the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) of the district.

There is no mention of any specific statement of the victim in the FIR. On this, the court has said that an interim order will be passed in the interest of justice. In this, the petitioner has been asked to appear before the police within 7 days. A police officer said that the accused appeared before them and his statement has been recorded. The victim is currently under the supervision of special police protection at the Children's Home.
