Presidential candidate Yashwant Sinha to visit Assam today

The opposition presidential candidate Yashwant Sinha is scheduled to arrive Assam today (July 13) to solicit support from Assam's opposition parties' MLAs and MPs for the July 18 elections, state Congress President Bhupen Bora said.

Sinha will arrive in on a chartered aeroplane today afternoon and  will meet with opposition Congress MPs, MLAs, independent MLA Akhil Gogoi, CPI(M) MLA Manoranjan Talukdar, and independent Rajya Sabha MP Ajit Kumar Bhuyan.

Droupadi Murmu, the presidential candidate for the NDA, visited Assam this week to campaign and met with BJP legislators and MPs as well as representatives from the party's allies the Asom Gana Parishad and United People's Party Liberal to solicit support.

Notably, the governing NDA holds 79 seats in the 126-member state legislative house, with 63 coming from the BJP, nine from the AGP, and seven from the UPPL.AIUDF leader and state legislator Badruddin Ajmal declared that his party, which has 15 MLAs, will also back Murmu. Murmu has received backing from the BPF, which has backed the administration in the assembly but hasn't formally joined forces with any other party.

Along with an independent candidate, the opposition parties include 27 MLAs from the Congress, three from the BPF, and one from the CPI(M).Assam has nine BJP MPs, three Congress MPs, an independent, and one AIUDF MP in the Lok Sabha. The governing NDA has six members in the Rajya Sabha, comprising four from the BJP, one each from the UPPL and the AGP, and one independent.
