Privacy bill to ban online 'surveillance advertising' introduced in the United States

The Banning Surveillance Advertising Act was introduced today by Congresswomen Anna G. Eshoo (D-CA) and Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), as well as Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ), and prohibits advertising networks and facilitators from using personal data to target advertisements, with the exception of broad location targeting to a known place, such as a municipality. EPIC Deputy Director Caitriona Fitzgerald stated, "The moment has arrived to disrupt corporate surveillance."

"Targeted advertising isn't just creepy; it may also have serious consequences for excluded groups. Individuals in these areas may be targeted for scams and disinformation, or they may be denied access to information about housing and employment possibilities, denying them vital life prospects. The Banning Surveillance Advertising Act would put an end to these discriminatory practises by prohibiting advertisers and data brokers from selling even the smallest piece of our private details.
