Rajya Sabha membership of AAP leader Raghav Chadha revoked

NEW DELHI: In a decision made by Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday, Aam Aadmi Party member Raghav Chadha's suspension from the Rajya Sabha was lifted. Chadha's membership had been suspended during the Monsoon session of Parliament following a motion moved by BJP Member of Parliament GVL Narsimha Rao.

The matter of Chadha's suspension was deliberated upon during a Privileges Committee meeting of the Rajya Sabha held in Parliament this afternoon. Chadha, in a video statement, expressed gratitude towards the Supreme Court for intervening, leading to the revocation of his suspension as a member of the Rajya Sabha. He lamented being unable to address people's queries during the 115-day suspension period, thanking both the honorable Supreme Court and the Rajya Sabha Chairman for the resolution.

Chadha's suspension on August 11 earlier this year was due to alleged "breach of privilege," stemming from complaints about including the names of five Rajya Sabha MPs in a select committee without obtaining their consent. The suspension was to remain in effect until the Privilege Committee completed its investigation into accusations of forging the signatures of these MPs in relation to the Delhi Services Bill motion in the Rajya Sabha.

Chadha had vehemently criticized the suspension, deeming it illegal and lacking legal authority. In response, he approached the Supreme Court to challenge his indefinite suspension from the Upper House. However, the court directed Chadha to meet Jagdeep Dhankhar and offer an unconditional apology.

A bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra expressed hope that the Chairperson would take a "sympathetic" view of the matter. Chadha's lawyer affirmed that the MP had no intention of undermining the dignity of the House and would seek an appointment with the Rajya Sabha Chairperson to present an unconditional apology.
