CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Police Department has initiated "Operation Kanthuvatti" to combat usurious money lenders across the state. The crackdown was sparked after a police policeman in Cuddalore committed suicide after being harassed by a usurious moneylender.

M. Selvakumar of Cuddalore district, a constable of the Xth Tamil Nadu Special police unit, committed suicide after being harassed by a money lender at Mathuvaniamedu in the state.

According to police sources, the deceased constable took a loan from a money lender in 2020 for Rs 5 lakh and signed blank stamp papers. He paid Rs 3 lakh in cash and Rs 2 lakh via bank transfer, but the money lender filled in the blank stamp paper with entries claiming Selvakumar had taken Rs 12 lakh from him and pressed him to refund the remaining, filing a police report.

To avoid legal action, the Crime Branch police advised Selvakumar to reimburse the money.

Police said, Selvakumar consumed poison and died on his way to the hospital on Tuesday. The state police responded quickly, and DGP C.Sylendra Babu has asked all District Superintendents of Police in the state to investigate any cases of usury that are now pending in police stations
