CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has launched the expansion of the breakfast scheme for primary school children, now including state-aided private schools in rural areas. This initiative was inaugurated on Monday, aligning with the birth anniversary of the late Chief Minister K Kamaraj, celebrated as 'Kalvi Valarchi Naal' (Education Development Day). The launch event took place in a school in Tiruvallur district, where Stalin joined the children for breakfast to personally check the food quality.

This expanded program aims to benefit 2,23,536 children across 3,995 government-aided primary schools throughout the state. Including students from both government and aided schools, over 20.73 lakh children will now receive nutritious breakfasts every day. Chief Minister Stalin highlighted that this scheme not only eases the financial burden on parents but also boosts students' self-confidence, improves school attendance, and reduces dropout rates.

Stalin stressed the importance of maintaining high food quality for children and encouraged officials to conduct surprise inspections to ensure these standards are met. The expansion of this scheme showcases the successful implementation of the Dravidian model, earning praise even from international observers, including in Canada. Initially launched in 2022, covering 1.14 lakh students from 1,545 schools, the program now aims to support 21 lakh students across 30,992 state-run and aided primary schools starting August 25, 2023.
