Vizag – Andhra Pradesh: In connection with an incident at Ramateertham temple, police in Andhra Pradesh's Vizianagaram district filed a charge against former federal minister P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju on Thursday. The temple's hereditary trustee, a member of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) politburo, and others were charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The case was filed at the Nellimarla Police Station after temple executive officer Prasad Rao filed a report. The TDP leader and others were charged with using criminal force to prevent a public official from doing his duties, as well as causing damage to public property and causing a nuisance.

Raju and his supporters attempted to remove the plaque that had been placed to lay the foundation stone for the temple's renovation, claiming that protocol and temple traditions had been broken. He got into a fight with the officials and attempted to take down the plaque.

The event occurred just minutes before deputy chief minister P. Pushpa Srivani and endowments minister V. Srinivas placed the foundation stone. Raju claimed that the state administration disobeyed protocol as well as custom and culture. Before settling on the foundation stone ceremony, he said the temple committee was not consulted. Raju also declined the opportunity to break the coconut during the ceremony. Only the trustee, he claimed, was authorised to do puja and lay the foundation stone.
