Hyderabad: The Telangana government is contemplating to increase the application and license fee for liquor shops from the new excise year. In the current excise policy, the government has recovered Rs 50 lakh from a liquor shop in an area with a population of about 5,000. A tax of Rs 55 lakh was collected for a shop with a population of 5,000 to 50,000. The license fee was Rs 60 lakh for a population between 50,000 and one lakh.
For a population of 1 lakh to 5 lakh it was Rs 65 lakh and for a population between 5 lakh and 20 lakh it would be Rs 85 lakh. An amount of Rs 1.10 crore will be collected for shops in areas having population of more than 20 lakhs. “In just six months between April and September this year, the government hasgenerated Rs 14,320 crore revenue through the sale of liquor. The government is planning to increase the revenue to Rs 17,000 crore in the next six months under the new excise policy.Â
has beenAccording to a senior official, in the Greater Hyderabad border, the highest license fee will be around Rs 1.50 crore. The overall revenue target from the sale of liquor under the new excise policy would be around Rs 30,000 crore per annum, officials said. The number of liquor vends is also likely to increase in Rangareddy, Nalgonda, Karimnagar and Warangal urban districts, which have registered a steady increase in the sale of liquor in recent months.
