Kolkata: In Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, a tragic incident unfolded as a 36-year-old man and his eight-year-old son lost their lives when their scooter was struck by a truck, followed by being run over by multiple vehicles, according to the police. The man's wife, who was also on the scooter, sustained critical injuries in the mishap.

The unfortunate event occurred in the Dus Dargah area on National Highway 31 while the family was returning home to Jalpaiguri town after attending a birthday party on Friday night. A speeding truck collided with their scooter, causing them to fall onto the highway. Subsequently, several vehicles ran over the father and son, as reported by an officer from the Kotwali police station.

Upon hearing their cries, locals rushed them to Jalpaiguri Medical College and Hospital. Tragically, doctors at the hospital declared the man and his son deceased. The injured woman was referred to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital in Siliguri for advanced treatment, the officer added.

Authorities suspect that foggy conditions may have contributed to the accident. In response to the tragedy, locals staged a demonstration on Saturday, urging the installation of lights in the area for enhanced visibility and safety.
