WASHINGTON: Officials said a suspected gunman was in custody after two campus officers were fatally shot on Tuesday at a private liberal arts institution in Virginia.

Bridgewater College President David Bushman identified the victims as police officer John Painter and safety officer J.J. Jefferson in an email to students, teachers, and staff.

"These officers were good friends, dubbed the 'dynamic duo' by many of us," Bushman added. "This year, John served as J.J.'s best man at his wedding. Students, educators, and staff all adored them. As I'm sure we all do, I'm sorry for their families and loved ones." He went on to say, "This is a sad and tragic day for Bridgewater College."

Alexander Wyatt Campbell, 27, is the alleged shooter, said to Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corrine Geller. Campbell is charged with two charges of capital murder, one count of first-degree murder, and one count of using a firearm in the conduct of a felony, according to Geller.

On Tuesday afternoon, police responded to an allegation of an active shooter on the Bridgewater College campus, and the perpetrator was apprehended not far from the college. The situation has been briefed to Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin and Attorney General Jason Miyares.
