Bhubaneswar: A woman officer posted with the education department in Odisha's Ganjam district was allegedly thrashed by the husband of a teacher on Tuesday. It is alleged that the woman teacher was not paid her salary for the last four years. Even after repeated complaints, the salary was not being paid, after which he lost his temper. However, the couple has been arrested after the officer lodged a complaint with the police.

According to information, Shantilata Sahu, the headmistress of the girls' high school in Belaguntha, had been staging a dharna in the office premises of the district education officer (DEO) for four months demanding release of the salaries that had been held up for four years. The couple stopped the DEO on Tuesday while she was on her way for lunch. Police said that while the DEO was talking to Shantilata, her husband slapped the officer.

After the incident, when the police arrested the two and were sitting in the van, Shantilata started crying. During that time, he alleged that his salary was withheld arbitrarily. She said that even after the complaint, neither the woman officer was being suspended nor the officials were giving her any notice.
