Coonoor: In Coonoor in Tamil Nadu's Nilgiris district, women sanitation workers have accused a town panchayat official of sexual harassment. Safai Karamcharis, represented by the Nilgiri Sanitation Workers Self Respect Trade Union, wrote to the District Collector of Nilgiris, accusing an official of Jegathala Nagar Panchayat of sexual harassment. and requested to suspend the concerned officer. They are waiting for the response.
A Karpagam, head of the union's women's wing, said that a permanent employee of Jegathala panchayat has been misbehaving with women for years. Including calling them to the office at odd hours when no one is around, getting their personal contact details and forcing them to talk to her. Some of the sweepers were widows, and they too have experienced unfair and violent treatment from this person.
The executive officer of Jegathala Nagar Panchayat alleged, “Based on the earlier complaint, we inquired about the issue and found that the allegations were baseless. The sanitation workers themselves had written a letter to the panchayat saying that the accused person had not sexually harassed them. Now that they have approached the District Collector, it is up to the higher authorities to initiate another inquiry or take relevant action.
